The owner of Sand Lake Cottages & Inn in Kearney, Ontario (home of the famous regatta) has some great recommendations for folks visiting the region this summer.
See Canada’s oldest provincial park and enter from the west side
A lot of people aren’t aware that there’s more than one entrance to Canada’s iconic park! While visiting the Almaguin Highlands check out the three entrances into Algonquin Park through Magnetawan River, Tim River or Rain Lake. If you’re looking for outfitters in the region, consider Canoe Algonquin or Algonquin Basecamp, both in Kearney.
Tour the Screaming Heads Outdoor Art Installation
A stay in Almaguin is not complete without a visit to the ‘Screaming Heads.’ (Take the back roads to Burk’s Falls from Sand Lake!) In Burk’s Falls you can also stop and enjoy some amazing fudge and coffee at the Burk’s Falls Welcome Centre Barista & Bakery. Stop at Brooks Falls – a hidden gem in Emsdale – on your way home to enjoy a picnic and to take some amazing photos.
Hit the Boats
If you love boating you’ll love Perry Lake near Kearney! Start out on Perry Lake, follow the Magnetawan River to Hassard Lake into Kearney and then continue on the Magnetawan River where you will access Beaver Lake. If you are out enjoying this lake system visit two General Stores and Local Restaurants by boat. Got a passion for kayaking or canoeing?
